How To Access The MikroTik Router Settings Using WinBox?
These are the steps required to access the MikroTik router admin dashboard. If you have prepared everything, there should be no problems at all.
STEP 1 – Connect Your Device To The Network
This is the first thing you need to do in order to access the router settings. The thing is that only devices that are already connected to the network can access the router settings. Devices that are not part of it, won’t be able to login successfully. So, the first thing to do is to connect your computer to the network either wirelessly or using the network cable
STEP 2 – Install WinBox On Your Device And Launch It
Download the WinBox software tool from the MikrotIK’s official website and install it on your computer. When the installation completes, launch the software by double-clicking the installation file.
STEP 3 – Enter The Required Login Details
NOTE: If you have changed any of the default settings before, make sure to login with the custom ones now.
When you launch WinBox you need to enter the following information:
Connect to: here you can enter the MikroTik default IP 192.168.88.1
Login: Here you can enter the MikroTik default username admin if you haven’t changed it before
Password: Leave this field blank if you haven’t set up a custom password before.
Click Connect and the MikroTik router settings will be available.
Now you can customize your network without problems.
Since we really need to take some care about our home network security, there are two things you need to do in order to secure your wireless network at a basic level. These are to change your wireless name and password. This is usually enough to prevent unauthorized access to your network.
How To Change The MikroTik Admin Username And Password?
Changing the admin router username and password is recommended in order to prevent anyone from accessing your MikroTik router settings. This is pretty useful if you share your WiFi password with your friends and visitors. This will stop any of them from accessing and messing up with the router configuration without your authorization.
So, when you login take a look at the bottom of the menu on the left and click on System and then click on Users. A popup window will open with the default admin login details. You can delete the default once you set up your custom admin username and password.
Click the plus sign under the Users tab to create a new user. In the new window complete the following fields:
Name: Here you can enter your new admin username
Group: Here you need to select full so you can be the admin
Password/Confirm Password: Here you can enter your new admin password
Click Apply and then OK.
A new user with admin privileges will be added. Now you can click on the old admin profile and click the minus sign.
You can check whether you have done everything right by logging out and logging in again with the new admin login details.
In case you forget the custom admin login details, you will need to reset your MikroTik router to factory settings. After that you will be able to login with the default MikroTik username and password.
How To Change The MikroTik Wifi Name And Password?
After you login to your MikroTik router using the WinBox tool, you will see the router admin dashboard with all the settings listed on the left.
To change the MikroTik default WiFi name you need to click on Wireless and then click on WiFi Interfaces tab in the horizontal menu.
Double-click on the active profile and in the new pop-up window find the SSID field. Delete the old WiFi password and enter the new one. After that, click on Apply, and then on OK.
Now, let’s change the WiFi password. You have already selected Wireless on the left-hand menu. In the horizontal menu click on Security Profiles.
Double-click the profile you want to change and in the new pop-up window enter the new WiFi password in both the WPA and WPA2 Pre-Shared Key fields. Click on Apply, and then on OK to save the changes.
If you have connected wirelessly it is possible that you will be logged out. Then connect again to the new SSID with the new password and also make sure to reconnect your other devices that have been connected to your network before.
Final Words
We hope that you didn’t find it difficult logging into your MikroTik router and changing the WiFi name and password using the WinBox tool. However, if you don’t have a computer available for that, you can install the MikroTik app on your mobile device. There are versions for both Android and iOS users. You will have full access to make all the changes you need.

In my professional career, I worked for router/modem manufacturers and internet providers. I like to think that I’m good at explaining network-related issues in simple terms. That’s exactly what I’m doing on this website – I’m making simple and easy-to-follow guides on how to install, set up, and troubleshoot your networking hardware. I also review new network equipment – modems, gateways, switches, routers, extenders, mesh systems, cables, etc.
My goal is to help regular users with their everyday network issues, educate them, and make them less scared of their equipment. In my articles, you can find tips on what to look for when buying new networking hardware, and how to adjust your network settings to get the most out of your wi-fi.
Since my work is closely related to computers, servers, and other network equipment, I like to spend most of my spare time outdoors. When I want to blow off some steam, I like to ride my bike. I also love hiking and swimming. When I need to calm down and clear my mind, my go-to activity is fishing.
