Sky Q Mini box is an amazing option that allows you to watch the content in other rooms in your house. Since you’re connecting it to the main box, which is then linked to the internet and other devices, it might be challenging to find a culprit whenever an issue occurs. Luckily, we are here to help you! If your Sky Q Mini box keeps freezing, there are a few things you can do to get it to work properly again!
1. Be Patient
In case it’s your first time connecting your Sky Q Mini box, you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer for the setup process to be over. In many instances, a Sky box could take 10 minutes to properly connect to the internet.
If you see an “Unsuccessful Connection” message, you should wait for a few minutes as the box will attempt to reconnect on its own. In case you get a “There is a problem joining your network” message, simply follow the steps the guide will take you through to reset the Sky Mini.
Then, wait for a few minutes to see whether the connection is made. Lastly, the “Connecting” message means that you’ll have to wait a bit more for your Sky box to set up. If you hear audio, but the screen is frozen, you should click on Dismiss and then try to connect the box once again.
2. Connect the Sky Q Mini Box to the Internet via WPS
The WPS is short for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. It’s a Sky feature that allows you to connect the router to wireless devices easily and without a password. It’s a great option for emergency situations and will help you verify whether your box is working properly.
If you’re connecting your Sky Q Mini box for the first time and you’re experiencing some issues, you should try to connect it via WPS. The drop in connectivity is temporary, and you’ll likely get the connection back quickly. However, in case you’re in a rush, there are ways to speed up the process.

Firstly, you should take your remote control and press Select. Step 2 out of 4 will start WPS on the Sky box. You’ll then see a message on your screen asking you to go to the nearest Sky Q device and hold the WPS button for 3 seconds. You can stop pressing it once you see the light flashing amber. Then, go to the Sky Mini and wait for a few minutes for the WPS process to finish. After that, your Sky Q Mini should be working properly.
3. Update your Sky Q Mini Box
In case you’ve had your Sky Q Mini box for quite some time and it suddenly starts acting out, you might have to update its software. To do that, you should go to Settings. Then, click on the Status menu to check whether the connection to Sky Q Mini is active. If it is, you should go to the Setup option and then choose Software Download.
The system will then look for available updates and let you know whether a new version is available. If it is, choose Download. You’ll have to restart the Sky Q Mini before being able to use it again.
4. Work on Improving the Internet Connection
There is a chance that your box isn’t at fault here. A poor internet connection could cause your Sky Q Mini to keep freezing. You can do a few things to try to improve the connection. Firstly, you should reboot the router. You’ll reboot the router by unplugging it from the power source, waiting for a couple of minutes, and then plugging it back in. It’s essential that you give your router some time to establish a connection with your Sky Q Mini box before checking whether your issue is solved.
In addition, you can improve the internet connection by positioning your router closer to the box. You should also make sure that no large objects are in between the router and the box. What’s more, your router should never be on the floor for an optimal signal.
5. Reset the Settings on the Sky Q Mini
Some of the features you set up could be causing your problems. That is why it might be smart to revert your Sky Q Mini settings to the default ones. You can achieve that by going to the Main Menu on the Sky Mini and finding the Settings option. Without actually clicking on Settings, you should press 0, 0, and 1. The box will then go into reset mode. You should give it a few minutes.
6. Restart the Sky Q Box
There is a possibility that something is wrong with your main Sky Q box, which is then causing problems with the Sky Q Mini. Luckily, the process of rebooting this device is pretty easy. You can reset your main Sky Q box by turning it off and then unplugging it from the power source. You should also do the same with the Sky Q Mini. Then, wait for a few minutes and plug both of these devices back in.
7. Set up the Same Standby Features on Both of Your Sky Boxes
Both your main Sky Q box and the Mini should have the same standby settings. Different standby settings could result in connectivity issues. That is why you should double-check whether both of them are using the same options. You’ll do that by pressing the Home button on your remote control and choosing Settings. Then, you should click on Setup and select Preferences. After that, you’ll have the option to click on the Standby mode to see the settings of both boxes.
8. Upgrade Your Subscription Plan
You won’t be able to watch Sky Q on more than one device with just any subscription. Only the Sky Q Multiscreen and Sky Q Experience plans have this option. Thus, if you aren’t paying for one of these, you likely won’t be able to use your Sky Q Mini the way you want to. Your only option will be upgrading the subscription plan. You can easily do that by logging into your account. Then, choose the Update your Sky Q subscription option.
9. Choose a Lower Resolution
A higher resolution could be too much for your connection to handle. That is why it’s helpful to switch to a lower one every time your box freezes. Alternatively, you can switch between 1080p and 1080i when your box stops working to see if that fixes your issue. You will be able to change the resolution by going to the Settings and then clicking on the Audio/Visual menu. There, you’ll get the option to switch your resolution.
