If you have a SMC router and you want to manage your home network, the first thing to learn is how to login to your SMC router. This is an easy way to manage the network through the router’s web-based graphical interface. All the settings are carefully grouped there so you won’t have any troubles finding what interests you. But if you aren’t sure what you are doing, it may be better to leave that for someone who is a bit more experienced or create a backup of the current SMC router configuration after you login.
This article will guide you through the SMC router login steps and also make some simple changes in the router stings that will greatly improve your WiFi network security. But first, let’s see what you need in order to start with the router login.
CONTENTS
What You Need:
- SMC wireless router
- Access o the network over WiFi or directly over the network cable
- PC, tablet or smartphone
- SMC admin login details (default or custom)
What Are The SMC Router Login Details?
Just like other routers produced by other router manufacturers, SMC uses a set of default login details to allow the user to access the router admin settings page. If you haven’t changed these here are the default login details you can use:
- Default IP address: 192.168.2.1
- Default username: admin
- Default password: smcadmin
In case the default login details have been changed you will need to use the custom ones to access the router settings page.
SMC Router Login Step-By-Step
The following steps will help you access the router settings page so please don’t hurry. The login details are case-sensitive and it is easy to make a mistake which will make the login process unsuccessful.
STEP 1 – Connect The Device To The Network
The key element of a successful login is to connect your device to the network without this the login will fail. So, if you have a wireless device, take the wireless password and connect the device. On the other hand, if you are using a laptop or a desktop PC you can connect it directly to the router using an Ethernet cable.
After you complete this step, everything else is easy.
STEP 2 – Open A Web Browser On Your Device
The router settings page can be accessed using a web browser. Therefore, launch a web browser on your device. Any of the browsers we use today will do the job so pick the one you use the most.
STEP 3 – Enter 192.168.2.1 In The URL Bar
Now you need to type the default SMC IP address 192.168.2.1 in the browser’s URL bar and press Enter if you are doing that from your PC or tap Go if you are using a smartphone or a tablet.
If the IP is correct you will be asked to enter a username and a password. However, if the router login page doesn’t appear you should check whether 192.168.2.1 is the correct IP. Windows users can do this easily using the Command Prompt, but if you are using another device follow this guide to find your router default IP address.
STEP 4 – Enter The SMC Admin Username And Password
We have already mentioned the default SMC router username and password. Type these into the corresponding fields and click on Login.
On the other hand, if these default login details have been changed before, use the new ones.
STEP 5 – You Can Modify The Router Settings Now
As you can see, if you have everything prepared, there shouldn’t be any problems accessing the SMC router settings. There might be some problems though if you aren’t connected to the network, or you mistype the login details, but in most cases everything goes as planned.
Basic WiFi Security Changes You Should Make
The security of your wireless network is something you should take seriously. Anyone who has access to your network can easily kick you out of it, access your personal files, abuse your internet connection and much more. Keeping the default settings (WiFi name and password, router IP address, admin username and password) is something that can allow anyone access your network with no problems. Therefore, we strongly recommend changing these or some of them as soon as possible. So, let’s begin!
How To Change The SMC Admin Password?
1. Login to your SMC router as described above.
2. Check the menu on the left and scroll down to System tools.
3. Click on it to expand it and click on Password.
4. Enter the old admin username and password first.
5. Then in the corresponding fields enter the New User Name, New Password and Confirm New Password.
6. After that click the Save button to save these changes.
If you have used a WiFi connection to connect your device and configure the router you will probably be disconnected from the network. In that case, just login again with the new login details.
In case you forget the new admin login details at some point in the future, you will have to reset your SMC router to factory settings and then you will be able to login with the default ones.
How To Change The Wifi Name and Password On SMC Router?
1. Login to your SMC router
2. Click on Wireless in the left-hand menu to expand it.
3. Now click on Wireless Settings.
4. In the new page delete the old network name and enter the new one in the SSID field.
5. Now click on Wireless Security.
6. Scroll down to WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
7. In the PSK Password field enter the new wireless password.
8. Click on Save to save the changes.
If you have been connected wirelessly you will have to connect to the new SSID again using the new WiFi password. And you will also have to reconnect your other wireless devices to the new network.
Final Words
As you can see the SMC login steps are pretty simple and this makes it easy for everyone to take care of its own home network. There are many other changes you can make, but for the everyday user the ones we have mentioned here are generally enough to keep the network safe. However, we don’t recommend setting up simple passwords and sharing the WiFi password with everyone. And keep the new login details somewhere safe for the next time you want to make some changes.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in network engineering and a master’s degree in computer science and engineering. I’m also a Cisco-certified service provider.
In my professional career, I worked for router/modem manufacturers and internet providers. I like to think that I’m good at explaining network-related issues in simple terms. That’s exactly what I’m doing on this website – I’m making simple and easy-to-follow guides on how to install, set up, and troubleshoot your networking hardware. I also review new network equipment – modems, gateways, switches, routers, extenders, mesh systems, cables, etc.
My goal is to help regular users with their everyday network issues, educate them, and make them less scared of their equipment. In my articles, you can find tips on what to look for when buying new networking hardware, and how to adjust your network settings to get the most out of your wi-fi.
Since my work is closely related to computers, servers, and other network equipment, I like to spend most of my spare time outdoors. When I want to blow off some steam, I like to ride my bike. I also love hiking and swimming. When I need to calm down and clear my mind, my go-to activity is fishing.
