In some cases, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/broadband-modem-is-experiencing-connectivity-issues\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the modem is just having difficulties establishing the internet connection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you can fix it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few things that can go wrong when a power outage happens, and we\u2019re going to discuss them later. We\u2019re also going to discuss how to troubleshoot the modem after a power outage. The modem works as a translator between your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/i\/isp.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISP (Internet Service Provider)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/what-is-the-router-used-for\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your router<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It takes analog signals sent from your ISP provides (either through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/coaxial-cable-for-internet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coax cables<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, phone lines, fiber cables, or air).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These signals are usually electrical impulses. The modem converts the electrical impulses into digital signals and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/adsl-modem-to-wi-fi-router\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sends them to your router<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your router allows your devices to connect to the internet (either via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/ethernet-vs-wi-fi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethernet cables or wirelessly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) That\u2019s how your devices communicate with the internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other thing that happens is that your devices send digital signals to the router, and these signals get sent to the modem. Once there, the modem converts these digital signals into electrical signals and sends them to the internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>How Does a Modem Work?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Modems Work, How Switches Work, How Routers Work,\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gwDaSY-1SRs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Modem Not Working After Power Outage<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons the modem might not be working after a power outage. The first and most obvious is that it is short-circuited. However, apart from short-circuiting, other things can happen:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>One component short circuit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: After a power outage, just a part of your modem can short circuit. So, the rest of the unit is functional, but the essential part that connects you to the internet can be damaged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Circuit breaker trip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Another thing that can happen is that you don\u2019t get the power to your modem because your circuit breaker tripped. This can happen when there\u2019s an overload, short circuit, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Burnt outlet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Bad wiring can cause an outlet to snap after the power comes back. If your modem is not working, check to see whether the outlet is still intact. You\u2019ll probably have to switch the circuit breaker too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interrupted power supply<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Sometimes, there\u2019s no damage to a component, but there\u2019s damage to the wiring. This rarely happens, but it\u2019s a pain to detect because the result is an intermittent power loss. It\u2019s likely to cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/cox-internet-keeps-cutting-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connectivity issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Modem Not Working After Power Outage &#8211; Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, every time a piece of hardware isn\u2019t working in our home, we feel the need to call our provider, customer support, or a technician to fix the issue. However, there are some steps we can take to troubleshoot the issue before contacting anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Check for Physical Damage<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing we need to do is check whether there\u2019s a smell of burnt plastic around the modem. Next, look at the power supply cables to see if they are damaged. If everything is fine in that department, the next thing you should check is if there are burn traces on the outlet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Turn the Modem Off for Some Time<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you eliminate physical damage, we need to leave the modem off for a few minutes until it loses all the electricity in its circuitry. Don\u2019t power it on until you\u2019ve checked the cables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can try powering it on and connecting to the internet once you\u2019re sure that everything is in order, and that there\u2019s no damage to the cables.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Restart the Modem<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If after the first attempt to turn on the modem and connect to the internet you still can\u2019t establish an internet connection, you might need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/restart-xfinity-router\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reboot the modem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To do this, simply turn it off again and wait for a minute before turning it back on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Factory Reset<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the previous troubleshooting step doesn\u2019t work, try a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/reset-your-wireless-router\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factory reset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The factory reset will get your modem to the original version of firmware, and it will let it start over fresh. Usually, there\u2019s a <\/span><b>Reset button <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the back of the modem that starts a factory reset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Change DNS<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing issues when trying to go online and visit a webpage, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/dns-server-not-responding-on-comcast-xfinity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it could be because the <\/span><b>Domain Name System (DNS)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> server stopped working. You could either try to reset it or change your DNS server.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reset your DNS server, open the Command Prompt and enter the following two commands (hit enter after each command):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>net stop dnscache<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>net start dnscache<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To change the DNS, go to <\/span><b>Settings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and click on <\/span><b>Network &amp; Internet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Once there, click on the <\/span><b>Change adapter options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Right-click<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the network you\u2019re using and select <\/span><b>Properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once there, find <\/span><b>TCP\/IPv4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, select it and click <\/span><b>Properties <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">again. Select <\/span><b>Use the following DNS server addresses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/us\/en\/insights\/articles\/get-faster-internet-with-better-dns-1909.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choose a suitable DNS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and enter the IP address of the DNS server you want to use. Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and your internet connection should work. Note: You can do the same for TCP\/IPv6.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>6. Contact the ISP<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve tried everything and nothing seems to work, then there could still be a power outage on the node connecting your LAN to the internet, or there\u2019s a power outage where your ISP&#8217;s headquarters are. Contact the ISP to verify and get help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Stay Online with No Power?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the power outage happens in the most inconvenient of times. It could happen when we\u2019re working, or when we\u2019re doing taxes and other important errands. So, we can do three different things to stay online.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Uninterrupted Power Supply<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re doing some really important work like piloting an unmanned aircraft, you need to stay online at all times. So, it might be a good idea to have your modem connected to an uninterrupted power supply. This way you\u2019ll remain online even when power outages happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Mobile Hotspot and Laptop<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most times when people work remotely and the modem is not working after a power outage, the best thing to do is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/routerctrl.com\/set-up-personal-hotspot-on-verizon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable the mobile (aka personal) hotspot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature on your phone and connect to it using your laptop. This way, you have two devices independent from the power supply (assuming they\u2019re both already charged).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Generator<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if you absolutely need your home network connected to the internet at all times, the best thing to do is get a backup generator. So, as soon as you experience a power outage, just turn the generator on and that\u2019s it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Note:<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Neither UPS nor generator will help your stay online during a large-scale power outage or when there\u2019s an outage at your ISP\u2019s node. So, you will have electricity, but you may not stay online even if you have a generator or a UPS. A similar rule applies to using a personal hotspot However, in this case, you depend on your carrier&#8217;s cell tower, not your ISP. If the cell tower is affected by the power outage, you won&#8217;t be able to access the internet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modem not working after a power outage is a common issue, especially in areas with unreliable power supply. In some cases, your modem might be damaged beyond repair. However, the problem could also be caused by the power outage at the node connecting us to our ISP, or by the power outage at our ISP&#8217;s headquarters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend following the standard troubleshooting steps explained in this post before contacting your ISP. After ensuring that there\u2019s no damage to the cables and the modem, try all the above-listed fixes.
